EPC QR Code Generator for SEPA Payments

An EPC QR code (also called a SEPA QR code, or GiroCode in Germany and Austria) contains the details of a euro bank transfer in a standard format defined by the European Payments Council guideline EPC069-12. When a payer scans it in a supporting banking app, the app fills in the recipient's name, IBAN, amount and payment reference, so they don't have to type a 22-character IBAN.

The payer still reviews and confirms the transfer in their own app. The QR code can't take money from anyone; it only saves typing.

EPC QR codes are widely supported by banking apps in Germany and Austria, where they're common on invoices, and are also supported by many banks in other SEPA countries, including Belgium, Finland and the Netherlands. Support varies by bank and app, and some apps only read the code through a "Scan & pay" or photo-transfer option rather than the phone's camera. Test the code with your own bank, and keep the IBAN printed in plain text next to it for everyone else.

1. Enter the recipient name exactly as it appears on the account.
2. Paste the IBAN. The generator checks the checksum, so most typos are caught before you print.
3. Add the BIC only if your bank asks for it; within SEPA it's usually optional.
4. Add an amount for a fixed invoice, or leave it empty so the payer can enter any amount, which suits donations.
5. Add a reference such as the invoice number so you can match the payment.
6. Download the PNG and test it with your banking app before sending.

• Invoices and payment reminders: fewer mistyped IBANs and references, so payments are easier to match.
• Donations: leave the amount empty and set a reference like "Donation 2026".
• Club fees, school trips and event tickets: one code per event with a clear reference.

The EPC guideline is written for documents like invoices, where the payment details are also shown in plain text so the payer can check them. It isn't intended as a checkout method where only the QR code is shown, such as at a shop till.

EPC QR codes only work for euro SEPA credit transfers. They don't show whether a payment was made, and they are static: to change the amount or reference, generate a new code. Keep the payment reference under 140 characters and the name under 70.
