The empty area around the pattern helps a scanner separate the code from nearby text, artwork, and edges.
A QR code is read as a grid of dark and light modules. The quiet zone is the blank border outside that grid. It gives the camera a visual boundary so nearby text, illustrations, rules, and package edges are less likely to be mistaken for part of the pattern. Treat the border as part of the final artwork even though it does not contain the encoded URL. DENSO WAVE specifies a margin four modules wide on each side of a standard QR code; one module is one small square in the pattern. For example, if a module measures 0.5 mm, each margin is 2 mm. This is a calculation example, not a universal minimum print size. See DENSO WAVE’s margin guidance. A colored background can remain behind it only when the border still reads as a clear, uninterrupted margin.
Do not crop tightly around the dark modules, place a frame directly against the pattern, or let a logo, bleed, sticker, or fold cover the margin. Check the export after a design tool has resized it because some templates remove transparent or white space. Keep surrounding copy outside the border and inspect every corner after trimming. If the code sits on a dark poster, use a light panel that includes the full blank margin rather than adding a narrow white strip only behind the modules.
Export the exact file that will be printed and scan it at its final size. Then scan a trimmed proof in the real lighting and viewing direction. Test from the distance a visitor will use and with more than one phone. If the code fails only after mounting, the problem may be glare, curvature, cropping, or contrast around the border. Keep a clean master image so a later layout can be rebuilt without repeatedly editing a damaged export.

Use a descriptive code name for the placement and keep the public destination available. After a destination update, repeat the physical scan test because a working redirect and a readable printed pattern are separate checks.
