Create a QR Code for a Window Display

A window code has to work through glass, from the pavement, at the hours people can see it, and with a destination that remains useful after closing.

Choose a public destination for passersby

Link to a public offer, menu, appointment page, product collection, or store information page. The page should explain what the visitor will see before asking for an account or payment. Check it on a phone while signed out. If the window is visible after business hours, decide whether the destination should show opening times, online ordering, a booking page, or a next-visit message. A QR code does not make a private dashboard or staff-only page public.

Design around glass, reflections, and distance

Use a conventional dark pattern on a light panel with its quiet zone intact. Test for reflections from the street, interior lights, sunlight, and nearby cars. Place the code where a passerby can hold a phone at a comfortable angle without standing in traffic or blocking a doorway. Check the size and viewing distance from the pavement, not from the designer's desk. If the glass is tinted or the poster is double-sided, test the exact side that visitors will scan.

Make the after-hours experience intentional

A window can attract scans when the shop is closed, so the linked page should state the current hours and the next available action. Keep temporary promotions, appointment slots, inventory, and menus current. If the offer ends, route a dynamic code to a replacement page or a clear explanation instead of leaving an expired coupon. Review the physical sign as well: a code beside an outdated price or event date creates a trust problem even when the redirect works.

Compare placements without identifying passersby

Free currently includes up to 3 dynamic codes and 14 days of Analytics and QR Studio. Pro is €5.99 per month with full analytics access plus SVG and CSV export. A scan means that the QRtracer redirect opened; it does not prove a purchase, booking, subscription, or identified person. Use one saved code for each window, campaign, or side of a building when the comparison is useful. QRtracer scan reports can help you compare code activity by placement; they do not identify who stood outside or whether a passerby became a customer. After mounting, perform a complete scan test from the street and repeat it when lighting or window artwork changes.

Frequently asked questions

Where should I test a window QR code?
Test it from the pavement or walkway where people will stand, through the actual glass, at different times of day. Reflections, tint, distance, and angle can change the result.
What should a window QR code show after the shop closes?
Use a public page that explains current hours and offers an available next step, such as online ordering, booking, or information for the next visit.
Can window scan counts tell me who visited the shop?
No. A scan records that the redirect opened. It does not identify a passerby, prove a visit, or prove that the visitor purchased anything.
